Early in September I was lucky enough to have about 9 days travelling around the South Island with my wife. We in the North Island often forget about this huge, incredibly beautiful place to the south of us, so it was great to be able to be reminded.
I am very fortunate to have an incredibly tolerant wife. I felt like every time we drove anywhere I would have to stop at least once to get a shot of another mind-blowing landscape, and she just rolls her eyes smiles at me as I tell her I won’t be long.
It’s hard to choose a favourite part of a trip like that. I loved everything from Kaikoura to Hanmer Springs to Nelson. If I had to pick a favourite, though, it would have to be Arthur’s Pass (between Christchurch and Greymouth) and Buller Gorge (between Westport and Nelson). We spent much of these drives in silence just drinking in the stunning nature.
I won’t be waiting another 6 years to visit the mainland again!
